Wakefield Civic Society Edith Grace Mackie (1853-1941) Philanthropist lived here founder and president of Wakefield Victoria nursing association.  Raised funds for Clayton Hospital children's ward and funded extension and reconstruction of St John's church.  Donated funds and land to Wakefield girls' high school.  Raised funds for the Paxton society, creating green spaces in Wakefield. "Deeds not words" 2019 With dream time creative

                             The unveiling of the Blue Plaque to Staff Nurse Nellie Spindler by Kevin Trickett M.B.E. of Wakefield Civic Society on the site of where she then lived at 107 Stanley Road when she worked at the City Fever Hospital, before joining Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service.

Wakefield Civic Society Records This mansion and its neighbour amongst the oldest surviving purpose-built banks in the country.  Were built in the 1790s for Ingram and Kennet.  J.E. Dykes 1823-76 prolific composer of hymn tunes.  Came to live here in 1841 1996

Wakefield Civic Society Records Near this site stood the public bakehouse of the Lords of the Manor of Wakefield.  It was demolished in 1861 to make way for the Church Institute.  Later youth house. 2000

John Nevison

                                         John Nevison was not the only notorious Highwayman to be captured in Yorkshire. Dick Turpin was arrested some 55 years later at Brough by the Village Constable. He was taken to York when it was realised he was a Horse Thief. He like, John Nevison, swung on the Gallows at the Knavesmire  on 7th April 1739. Today (see picture below) it is on the edge of York Racecourse and popular with Dog Walkers.
